As the micro-economy project entered its 16th year, my collaborative team welcomed new members: four young women. In their daily lives, they are mothers of young children and family caregivers; they volunteer at the Hong Kong Women Worker’s Association, and they share a love for handicrafts and aesthetics. Beginning in 2025, the team members used reclaimed umbrella ribs as their primary medium, independently practicing the weaving of various patterns. This experimentation became a body of work I titled Weaving Diary. This new piece, Weaving Diary_2, systematically organises their individual patterns into a new "metal lace" window grille handkerchief.
Old umbrellas were disassembled—their fabric stripped from the frames, then reorganised and interwoven. To shield against wind and rain is the inherent duty of an umbrella; it is also a poignant reflection of the daily lives of these women, who have long held up the sky for their families. What initially appear as layers of barriers and confinement transform into exquisitely crafted metal lace. Merging the soft with the rigid, they form a most resilient shield. Ultimately, this resilience belongs not just to the umbrella ribs, but to the fortitude of the creators themselves, quieted within the domestic sphere—a testament to the conviction of modern women taking destiny into their own hands.
This artwork serves as both the material evidence of women’s labour and a collective diary that continues to be written.

Since its inception in 2009, my Micro-Economy project’s partnership with the Hong Kong Women Workers' Association has spanned over 17 years. In recent years, the selection of the cityscape imagery has become a shared process with the women, guiding our collective exploration as they photograph the vistas of their own neighbourhoods. Together, we discuss the interplay between colour distribution and the urban environment, subsequently categorising, cutting, and piecing together reclaimed fabric by palette to mirror the diverse landscapes of these communities. Blending the imagined with the real, the resulting works form a shared yet distinct atlas of the city.
The singular thread running through these varied landscapes is a white horizontal line positioned at the centre of each piece. It evokes a distant view of the harbour—a boundary separating the tangible reality from the illusory reflection below—perhaps pointing toward what I hold to be the city's immutable core.
This body of work has travelled and been exhibited in various cities, tethered each time to local construction waste. Through this site-specific approach, the installations explore the relationship between a city and its inner self, as well as the resonances and divergences that exist between different urban centres.
