Zen Garden in SIMoA

recycled materials ( scholar’s stone, construction remains, metal pipes, soccer balls, basketball, umbrella ribs, fabric ) , concrete
Jaffa Lam's Zen Garden in SIMoA constructs a contemporary Zen garden and landscape of hope using urban pipes, umbrella ribs, fabric, solid basketballs, a football suspended from a branch. Notably, the work is conceived as a site-specific installation developed in direct response to SIMoA’s spatial context. Two stones incorporated into the overall Zen garden were sourced from the vicinity of the museum. In traditional Chinese culture, landscapes and gardens are spaces for physical and mental cultivation, connecting with the universe to refine the gentle and orderly bodies of scholars. Today, that context has vanished, replaced by technological realities and urban spectrums. The artist treats reinforced concrete as a new arena for physical and mental exercise, endowing it with the implication of endless growth—yet this very growth fosters a distracted and amnesiac modern subject. As children drift away, the football hanging from the branch becomes a visual metaphor where loss and hope intertwine.
